Flag football has developed rapidly as a low-contact form of American football and has created new opportunities for women and girls to participate in a traditionally male-dominated sporting domain. Recent research has begun to examine female flag football athletes directly, particularly in relation to physical qualities, injury epidemiology, and mental health, while earlier scholarship has addressed gendered participation and coeducational flag-football environments. This paper synthesizes the value, challenges, and development pathways of women’s participation in flag football. The evidence indicates potential benefits in physical activity, physical fitness, psychological well-being, social participation, and gender-inclusive sporting opportunities. At the same time, women’s participation is affected by gender stereotypes, unequal participation opportunities, limited women-specific coaching and equipment, safety concerns, and an emerging institutional and competition system. Drawing on recent empirical studies and established research on women’s flag football, the paper proposes four development pathways: strengthening public awareness and gender-inclusive pedagogy; improving facilities, coaching, and equipment; establishing a stable competition and social-support environment; and strengthening safety standards and participant protections. Because the female flag-football literature remains relatively small, the paper also identifies the need for further longitudinal, cross-cultural, and intervention-based research.
